The Department of Medical Humanities & Bioethics in the College of Medicine at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) seeks applicants at the level of instructor or assistant professor for an open, hard-money position with our team of dedicated and experienced faculty.
We seek a candidate who will focus their primary efforts on clinical ethics consultation, serving two major medical systems—the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the state’s only academic health center, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital, which houses the state’s only pediatric intensive care unit and burn center. Candidates for this position should have robust experience in clinical ethics consultation. Responsibilities will also include education of clinical faculty, staff, and trainees.
Given our department’s mission and history, we especially encourage applications from candidates able to support education in health humanities and bioethics.
Applicants should email a cover letter, CV, and names and contact information of 3 references: D. Micah Hester. PhD Chair, Department of Medical Humanities and Bioethics University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Email: hesterdm@uams.edu Phone: 501-661-7973
Department Originally established as freestanding Division in the UAMS College of Medicine in 1982, the Department of Medical Humanities & Bioethics (http://humanities.uams.edu) currently provides ethics education, consultation, and other support throughout the institution and its affiliated partners, including Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The Department is particularly proud of its many offerings by nationally recognized faculty in a broad range of health humanities, including literature, art, and law. As the state’s only academic medical center, UAMS provides vast opportunities for bioethics and humanities scholars to participate in substantive, meaningful work.
Community Referred to as a “well-kept secret,” Little Rock (the #1 small-to-medium sized city to live in the US according to Kiplinger Magazine in 2013 and one of the best places to live according to US News & World Report 2021) offers a rare balance of comfortable living, world-class arts and cultural events in the city, and easy access to Arkansas’ vast array of outdoor activities. Several vibrant neighborhoods in the city center balance historic southern charm with contemporary comfort. A short drive from downtown, city scenery gives way to the hills and valleys of Central Arkansas. Home to a thriving urban farming and local food movement, Little Rock was named one of five “Secret Foodie Cities” in the U.S. by Forbes Travel Guide in 2014. Little Rock fosters national and international cultural, academic and professional development as home several public and private universities and colleges including UALR and the Bowen School of Law, the UA Clinton School of Public Service, and the numerous colleges of UAMS (including health professions, nursing, pharmacy, and public health).
Applicants for an assistant professor-level appointment must have a terminal degree in one of the following: a humanities or social science discipline, law, medicine, nursing, or other health profession. Master’s degree-level training will be considered for an instructor position. Salary will be commensurate with rank and relevant experience, following the APBD salary survey and AAMC’s national medical school salary survey for PhDs in bioethics. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is a health sciences university and the state's only academic medical center.
