The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy and Department of Medical Education are seeking applications for a faculty member to lead the school’s ethics education, research, practice and service missions, as the Director of the Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
The Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy is responsible for clinical ethics services at several affiliated hospitals, and so preference will also be given to applicants with experience in hospital ethics processes, including consultation, policy creation, review, and education. To build on the Institute’s three decades of work in health information technology, the ideal candidate will expertise in biomedical informatics, including artificial intelligence, and familiarity with academic medical center operations, including clinical, research and public health informatics. Areas of particular interest may include the development and use of artificial intelligence techniques in medical education, healthcare delivery, health-related research, and quality improvement activities; ethical issues related to the use and design of digital health applications, including eHealth tools such as patient portals; and the ethical, legal and social implications of genomic medicine, including bioinformatics, and public health informatics or digital epidemiology.
The successful candidate should have evidence of leadership experience, national recognition as a scholar and researcher in bioethics, with an exemplary record of funded research and publication in bioethics with experience in medical education and the role of clinical, research and public health ethics and the humanities in the medical curriculum. Candidates must have an M.D., Ph.D., MD/Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree and a record commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. They should also have documented experience of cross-disciplinary collaboration, as the Institute’s director is expected to work with colleagues from business, law, engineering and other schools, and with community and government partners.

The Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy has reached its 30th anniversary as a source of education, research and service for students, faculty and the community. The Institute specializes in ethics in health information technology, international bioethics and developmental disability ethics.
EDUCATION
Institute faculty conduct or help conduct courses, seminars, conferences and symposia at all three University of Miami campuses and throughout Florida. On the medical campus, faculty share responsibility for ethics education of medical and science graduate students. On the Coral Gables campus, faculty teach in or collaborate with colleagues from the Departments of Philosophy and Business Law, and the Schools of Nursing and Law. On the Marine campus, Bioethics Institute faculty share responsibility for education in the responsible conduct of science. Bioethics Institute faculty conduct training sessions and provide ethics consulting services to hospitals and other health care organizations throughout the region.
RESEARCH
Our research emphasizes ethics and health computing (including bioinformatics), international bioethics and health policy, genetics and stem cell scienc...e ethics and public health and epidemiology. Additional highlights: Faculty have collaborated with with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on development of a training program in research ethics; the Institute of Medicine on a study of “Strategies to Protect the Health of Deployed U.S. Forces”; the New York-based Choice in Dying organization on a project to study medical student education; and other organizations.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Institute of Bioethics and Health Policy collaborates with a variety of community, government, religious and other organizations. Faculty have provided expertise to the state’s Department of Corrections, Department of Children and Families, and Department of Health, and to a variety of community health organizations. Program faculty collaborate with a range of government and community organizations on a variety of projects and educational efforts.
