| Center for Urban Bioethics NTT Faculty Opportunity / Critical Social Scientist Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University Philadelphia, Pennsylvania www.temple.edu/medicine Summary of Opportunity The Center for Urban Bioethics (CUB) at Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine is excited to welcome applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. CUB’s educational mission is targeted primarily to future and current medical professionals and researchers with the goal of creating more equity-focused, racially literate and trauma-informed professionals. Urban Bioethics is guided by its attention to agency, capacity, social justice, and solidarity. The successful candidate will be a scholar-practitioner whose interests complement those of the existing faculty and CUB’s educational mission. The position is a hard-money funded teaching position, with 10% protected research time in order to contribute to the continuous development of scholarship in these areas. Working under the Director of Education, this position will have responsibility for: - Teaching graduate courses including‘Community Engagement’ & ‘Critical Social Science’ within the MA Urban Bioethics (MAUB) core curriculum
- Designing and offering semester-long electives for the MAUB students (every other year)
- Contributing to CUB teaching responsibilities across Temple’s medical and dental schools including the Social and Structural Determinants of Health Thread for medical students (through didactic lectures, facilitating small group discussions, and intellectual contributions to the Thread’s continuous development)
- The coordination and continued development of the LKSOM Service Learning Program
- Contributing to the scholarship and the intellectual life of the Center
- Thesis and other graduate student advising
- Other possibilities based on successful applicant’s areas of interest
The ideal candidate will: - Possess academic credentials for a faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
- Hold a terminal degree in any of the social science disciplines under the broad umbrella of bioethics, such as anthropology, social epidemiology, sociology, public health, geography and urban studies, or related fields.
- Have demonstrable experience and/or expertise in:
- community-based advocacy or community-driven research or practice
- teaching and classroom facilitation skills
- qualitative or mixed-methods social science
- bioethics, health equity and social determinants of health
- social justice in health and medicine
- mentoring or advising graduate students
- community-based and driven programing
- Support and promulgate diversity among faculty, staff, students and patients.
