The Division for Physical Activity and Weight Management (DPAWM), Department of Internal Medicine, The University of Kansas Medical Center supports research, training and clinics for the promotion of physical activity and nutrition and prevention and treatment of obesity in children, adolescents, and adults. Interests include energy balance, metabolic syndrome, weight management delivery systems, technology, brain function, special populations (those with intellectual and physical disabilities), rural populations, medical comorbidities, and others.

Currently, the Division has multiple projects supported by the National Institutes of Health to investigate exercise and nutrition. A NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence has just been awarded for a 5-year period starting 4.1.122 termed KC-MORE (Kansas Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research). Since 1986 the Division has maintained an ongoing clinical research treatment program termed the Kansas Weight Management Programs designed to provide weight loss and weight maintenance for adults. This program also supports pilot projects that can be used for future major funded research studies.

Mentorship is provided by DPAWM  faculty and staff who provide guidance for publications, conference presentations and a paid training course. Opportunities for collaboration are available with established departments within The University of Kansas Medical Center, The University of Kansas Health System, The University of Kansas-Lawrence, and Children’s Mercy Hospital.
