Objective: Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan offers an exciting opportunity for a clinical ethics fellowship. The goal of the fellowship is to provide an intensive practical training in clinical ethics consultation in a multi-hospital system with a diverse multi-cultural patient population. The focus is to train fellows with the skills and experience required for clinical ethics consultation in a varieties of health care settings. Work will include exposure to a variety of practice areas from clinics to a large metropolitan, level 1 trauma center with all solid organ transplants, NICU, Advanced Cardiology with ECMO, VAD programs, and a new multi-million-dollar Cancer Center as well as smaller community-based hospitals within our 5 hospital system. This fellowship program is the ideal training opportunity to acquire skills required in a clinical ethicist/ethics consultant and covers the ASBH’s Core Competencies for Healthcare Ethics Consultations. It is expected that by the completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to proficiently and independently conduct clinical ethics consultations and pass the ASBH HEC-C exam. The candidate is expected to have a solid academic knowledge of bioethics coming into the fellowship, as this program is not intended to be an academic exposure to bioethics.
Program: The Clinical Ethics Fellow will work under the supervision of the Senior Bioethicist. The Clinical Ethics Fellowship includes the following components:
Clinical Ethics Consultation across all levels of medical care, all ages, and specialties.
Clinical Ethics Documentation utilizing an electronic health record system
Discussion of clinical ethics issues as they arise in the course of an active clinical case
Participation in Clinical Rounds providing ethics input
Participation across a broad range of hospitals within our System and Communities
Participation in the educational activities of the Department, including the teaching of medicalstudents and house staff across a broad system in multiple settings.
Assist with ethics policy development
Participation in monthly case conferences and participation in the Palliative journal club
Opportunity to work in a variety of other Henry Ford Health System hospitals’ ethics committees
Mentored scholarship in clinical or research ethics including a capstone project
Participation in a major hospital IRB for ethical input
Active participation on the ethics consultation service, including supervised on-call
Candidates are required to have an advanced degree in Bioethics or Health Care Ethics, preferably a Doctorate or a Master’s degree.
Clinical experience in a relevant area of practice, which could include medicine, nursing,bioethics, social work, clinical psychology, chaplaincy, and/or health law. Interdisciplinarytraining and experience a plus.
Ability to travel moderate distances during the day between institutions independently
