The Bioethicist provides clinical ethics and research ethics consultation, monitors patients’ rights for accreditation and quality improvement purposes, provides clinical ethics and research ethics education to staff, organizes multi-disciplinary rounds and conferences and serves as a resource for staff, patients and families.
The Bioethicist performs clinical, organizational, and analytical functions within the Donnelley Ethics Program (DEP), including but not limited to: clinical, research, and institutional ethics services, grant and report writing, quality improvement activities and special projects.
Provide ethics consultation and advise on inquiries regarding clinical ethics cases brought to the Donnelley Ethics Program using SRAlab’s process of Ethics Consultation, including investigating facts, interviewing relevant stakeholders, analyzing ethical issues, interviewing patients as appropriate, writing summaries and notes for the medical record and/or team.
Collaborate on new initiatives in research ethics with Director and affiliated staff. This includes participating in research ethics consultation, outreach to multidisciplinary staff members, collaboration with other departments including research staff and research compliance.
Provide ethics consultation and advise on inquiries regarding organizational ethics issues that may be brought to the Donnelley Ethics Program. These consults involve independent investigation, research, interviews with relevant stakeholders and collaboration with colleagues in other departments to propose appropriate recommendations or to draft relevant policies to address such issues.
Plan, market and facilitate Schwartz Center Rounds for the hospital and maintain relationship with the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare.
Serve on the Hospital Ethics Committee. Responsibilities include reporting on educational programs as well as clinical, research and institutional ethics issues each quarter.
Takes the lead on special projects or initiatives for the Hospital Ethics Committee by organizing and participating in subcommittees. This includes responsibilities for collaborating with various stakeholders to identify the scope of the initiative, to create a plan for the initiative and to help implement new changes/programs as needed. This also includes assisting with policy changes where needed.
Develop and implement specific quality improvement projects as identified and assigned, such as managing and completing audits, surveys and education needed to fulfill responsibilities for the patient rights subchapter of the Periodic Performance Review.
Plan, develop, deliver and evaluate educational programs related to clinical ethics, research ethics and medical education at SRAlab in collaboration with the Director and affiliated staff.
Organize multidisciplinary ethics rounds (e.g., grand rounds), joint ethics rounds on campus, and conferences in collaboration with the Director and affiliated staff.
Develop collaborative scholarly activities in ethics and contribute to the literature.
Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of SRAlab.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
Master’s Degree required. Doctorate preferred.
Completion of a clinical ethics fellowship or internship in a healthcare organization with supervised work in a clinical ethics role required.
Eligibility to sit for Healthcare Ethics Certification examination (HEC-C) required
Prior experience with a comprehensive understanding of applied clinical ethics, preferably in a health care setting with experience in ethics consultation, teaching and/or policy development. Service on an ethics committee preferred.
Three to five years’ experience working in a disability-related field or in the field of clinical ethics preferred.
Interest in scholarly activities preferred
Advanced organizational skills necessary to efficiently prioritize and complete a variety of tasks and provide leadership.
Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting in order to maximize quality and efficiency of operations.
Ability to manage and effectively create and deliver high-quality educational programming.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, families and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
