Columbia University School of Professional Studies (SPS) invites applications for full-time positions at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline or Senior Lecturer in Discipline to teach in Narrative Medicine Master of Science degree program. This position will begin on January 1 or July 1, 2019. This is a full-time appointment with multi-year renewal contingent on successful review. The successful candidates will teach courses related to narrative medicine in one or more of the following areas: literary studies; continental philosophy; qualitative anthropology; feminist, gender, & queer studies; narrative psychology; health-related humanities; medical sociology; narratology; linguistics; and critical race theory.
Advising in the Narrative Medicine Program program is an expectation of the position, as is actively contributing to curriculum and program development and evaluation; and participation in the development and execution of strategies to support program students. The successful candidate should be capable of contributing to the program's academic mission, and demonstrate the potential for vision and direction setting in areas such as professional development opportunities for students, marketing, enrollment, student life, and alumni affairs. The ideal candidate will hold a doctoral or terminal degree in one or more of the following disciplines as it relates to narrative medicine: literary studies, narratology, sociology, anthropology, history, medicine, psychology, psychotherapy, philosophy, health advocacy, literature, intercultural studies, writing, visual art and aesthetic theory, oral history, American studies or a related field. Ideal candidates should have (1) leadership experience applying these disciplines across a wide spectrum of health-care contexts; (2) graduate level teaching experience; and (3) deep and demonstrated understanding of the academic and applied trends that are driving best practice and research in the field of Narrative Medicine.
Ideal candidates will exhibit a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design, and professional practice and/or scholarship.
Candidates at the rank of Senior Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have substantial experience and accomplishments, and a superlative record of teaching as a lecturer, and documented evidence of excellence in carrying out administrative or other department responsibilities. Candidates at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have teaching experience, documented evidence of pedagogical excellence, and evidence of professional growth and activity in the given field.
