Bioethicist, Sutter Health Bay Area - Program in Medicine & Human Values
The Bioethicist under the supervision of the Program Director will provide ethics expertise to designated hospitals in Sutter Health Bay Area. Using the PMHV standardized case consultation model the bioethicist will offer guidance to patients, their families, and professional staff on ethical, legal and policy issues and concerns stemming from clinical interactions between health care professionals and patients. This position will support the Ethics Committees of designated hospitals by receiving and coordinating all requests for ethics consultations, executing consultations and following up with cases after referral. The Bioethicist will be responsible for educating and training the hospital ethics committees of designated hospitals and providing guidance pertaining to policy formulation. The Bioethicist will participate in regular ethics rounds in designated hospitals and lecture at appropriate Sutter Health Bay Area educational events. This position requires travel between hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Education: For non-physicians, an advanced degree in bioethics or a related field; PhD or JD preferred. For physicians or other health professionals, a Clinical Bioethics Fellowship of at least one year, at a recognized bioethics program.
Knowledge: Must possess knowledge of principles, concepts and methods of health care ethics consultation, ethics program development, and bioethics education. Should have knowledge of biomedical ethics terms and literature, professional standards, and case analysis; Knowledge of Joint Commission guidelines; Basic understanding of medical terminology. Knowledge of California health care law desired.
Experience: Experience with clinical ethics consultation, bioethics education and interdisciplinary collaboration. Experience in a health care setting with patient care, ethics education, ethics committee operations, and complex case reviews.
