The Alden March Bioethics Institute (AMBI) at Albany Medical College, Albany, New York invites applications for an open rank tenure track faculty position with advanced training in empirical methods and their application to bioethics. AMBI is an internationally recognized leader in the field of bioethics. The multidisciplinary center focuses on education, research, and clinical consultation. In addition to scholars, educators, and clinicians affiliated with Albany Medical College, our faculty includes professors from the Albany Law School and other regional and national experts.
The successful candidate will join multidisciplinary colleagues from several fields, including medicine, philosophy, social work, law, policy, gender and sexuality studies, biomedical and social sciences, and nursing who provide an active clinical ethics consultation service in a 734-bed teaching hospital; engage in conceptual and empirical research; teach medical professionalism and ethics to medical students and health care professionals and scientific integrity to biomedical science graduate students; and participate in the teaching and operation of an established online graduate bioethics program that offers certificate, master’s, and doctoral program options.
Responsibilities include the following:
Teaching research ethics and methods in bioethics to students in AMBI’s online graduate bioethics program
Teaching scientific integrity to basic science students
Teaching in a four-year educational program in ethics and humanities for medical students
Collaborating on and publishing conceptual and/or empirical scholarly works
Serving on hospital and college committees, task forces, and relevant community groups
Serving as a research advisor to and potentially contributing as a part time consultant on the clinical ethics consultation service.
Salary and rank are competitive and will be based on training and experience. Candidates should have a PhD, JD, MD or equivalent, with advanced training and experience in empirical research methods their application to bioethics and healthcare.
Experience with bioethics education for medical students and health care professionals
Demonstrated ability/potential to engage in significant bioethics research and scholarship on a broad range of issues
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Keen interest in creatively contributing to the intellectual life of a vibrant, multidisciplinary bioethics program

The Alden March Bioethics Institute (AMBI) of Albany Medical College offers Graduate Certificates in both clinical ethics and clinical ethics consultation, a Master of Science in Bioethics with both comprehensive and clinical ethics consultation concentrations, and a Doctorate of Professional Studies in Bioethics with concentrations in both clinical ethics consultation and health ethics and policy. AMBI is an internationally recognized leader in the growing field of bioethics. The multidisciplinary center focuses on education, research and clinical consultation. In addition to professors, physicians and other experienced clinicians affiliated with Albany Medical Center and Albany Medical College, our faculty includes professors from Albany Law School and other experts in the Capital Region community.
The Institute is named for Alden March, M.D., who founded Albany Medical College in 1839. Dr. March was a distinguished 19th century surgeon and innovative professor of anatomy, who also co-founded the American Medical Association.
The Institute was established in 1993 as the Center for Medical Ethics Education and Research. Under the direction of John Balint M.D., over the nex...t decade, medical school classes in ethics, clinical consultations and several research programs emerged. Today, we offer graduating medical students a distinction in bioethics, have expanded our clinical consultations, offer ongoing resources to graduate resident education, and continue with research in the field of bioethics.
