Faculty- Wellness Position Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Overview: Western Michigan Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine (WMed) seeks qualified candidates for an institutional leader with programmatic and academic responsibilities focused on faculty, student, resident/fellow, and staff wellness. The title of this leadership position is commensurate with experience and accomplishments.
Responsibilities: The faculty leader for wellness is charged with developing and implementing programs that improve wellness and champion a healthy environment for all members of the WMed community. This includes facilitating development of lifelong skills for achieving and maintaining optimal physical and mental health. The leader provides guidance and support to identify needs for program development, and also serves as a liaison to standing committees, organizations, and affiliates. The academic appointment is full-time faculty in the program in Medical Ethics, Humanities, and Law. The leader will work collaboratively with faculty and associate dean for Faculty Affairs, associate dean for Student Affairs, associate dean for Graduate Medical Education, and the director of Human Resources.
This leadership position has a unique scope of responsibilities that include education, program development, assessment, intervention, scholarship, peer support, stress management, and implementing methodologies to cultivate compassion and resilience across the institution. Working closely throughout the entire WMed community, and in close partnership with healthcare providers across Southwest Michigan, this position provides leadership to improve the well-being of all members of the WMed community.
Examples of duties include the following:
Assess the current institutional resources, needs, and opportunities for improvement regarding wellness for the entire WMed community
Oversee the planning and implementation of faculty, resident/fellow, student, and staff wellness programs
Coordinate wellness education and activities throughout the WMed community
Develop a national presence for the School of Medicine wellness program by participating on key regional and national committees, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at regional, national, and international meetings
Serve as a liaison with and resource to the Fetzer Institute to collaborate on programs which include spirituality, inner-development, whole-person health, resiliency, and holistic approaches to wellness
Serve as a liaison between the School of Medicine and community health care providers for wellness
Collaborate with existing and/or develop preventative programs to decrease the frequency of burnout while enhancing the mental, physical, psycho-social health of the WMed community
Support all members of the WMed community to develop lifelong skills to achieve and maintain physical and mental health throughout their careers
Collaborate with existing programs and initiatives to promote wellness
Lead an advisory council for health and wellness
Provide training for faculty, residents/fellows, students, and staff, including to students and residents/fellows at orientation
Facilitate all members of the WMed community's awareness and access to medical and mental health services
Participate on appropriate medical school committees to ensure that the faculty, resident/fellow, student, and staff wellness perspective is represented
Qualifications: Candidate must meet the qualifications for faculty appointment in the medical school, including an advanced terminal degree (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, PsyD, EdD, etc.) in a relevant field. Preference will be given to candidates with at least five years of experience in health promotion, evidence of scholarship in the area of student and/or health professional wellness, demonstrated experience in program development at a university or academic medical center, success as an advocate for faculty and learners, and experience with innovative curriculum development including evidence-based decision making and program evaluation. The optimal candidate will bring a broad and inclusive commitment to health and wellness that includes the biopsychosocial and spiritual domains. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience.
About Western Michigan University School of Medicine (WMed) As one of the newer US medical schools, WMed is an exciting environment in which to pursue a postdoctoral experience.
